5 Simple Ways to Stay Rooted in Your Faith During a Busy College Semester 🌿

If there is one thing I have learned about college, it is that life can get BUSY really quickly.

Between classes, assignments, studying, work, church, friendships, extracurriculars, and trying to have some sort of social life, there always seems to be something that needs to get done. Sometimes I feel like I make a to-do list just to add five more things to it the next day.

And when life gets busy, it can be really easy for our relationship with God to get pushed to the side.

I've definitely had moments where I think, “I'll read my Bible tonight,” or “I'll pray when I have more time.” Then suddenly it's 10:30 at night, I'm exhausted, and I'm wondering where the entire day went.

But something I'm learning is that staying rooted in Christ during a busy season doesn't mean having the perfect Bible study routine or spending hours in prayer every single day.

It means intentionally making room for God in the middle of the life you're already living.

So, as I continue navigating college and figuring out how to balance all the different parts of my life, here are 5 simple ways I'm learning to stay rooted in my faith during a busy college semester.

1. Make Time for God Before Your Schedule Fills Up

One of the biggest things I'm learning is that if I don't intentionally make time for God, something else will always fill that space.

There will always be another assignment.

Another email.

Another test to study for.

Another thing on my to-do list.

And while those things are important, I don't want to get so caught up in everything I'm doing that I forget about the One I'm doing it all for.

For me, spending time with God doesn't have to look the same every day. Some days I might have more time to sit down with my Bible and journal. Other days, I might only have a few quiet minutes before class.

And that's okay.

I think sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to have this perfect morning routine where we wake up at 5 a.m., drink our coffee, read five chapters of the Bible, journal for 30 minutes, pray for an hour, and somehow still make it to our 8 a.m. class.

If that works for you, that's amazing!

But if it doesn't, don't let the idea of a “perfect” quiet time keep you from having one at all.

Start where you are.

Maybe it's reading one chapter.

Maybe it's reading a few verses.

Maybe it's sitting in your car before class and praying.

The important thing is creating space to spend time with God.

2. Keep Your Bible Close

This one sounds simple, but I really believe it helps.

If my Bible is somewhere I can see it, I'm much more likely to actually open it.

College life can make it easy to get into the habit of rushing from one thing to the next. Having my Bible nearby gives me a little reminder to slow down.

I also love Bible journaling, which is one of the reasons I wanted it to be such a big part of The Rooted Life.

For me, Bible journaling is a way to combine two things I love: God's Word and creativity.

I love highlighting verses that stand out to me, writing notes in the margins, adding little drawings, using different colors, and keeping track of things God is teaching me.

But here's something I want to make really clear:

You do NOT have to be artistic to Bible journal.

You don't need a Pinterest-perfect Bible.

You don't need a bunch of expensive supplies.

You don't even have to write anything in your Bible if that's not your thing.

Sometimes staying rooted simply means opening your Bible and spending time reading God's Word.

Your time with God doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

Find what helps you slow down, focus, and actually spend time with Him.

🌿 My Bible & Quiet Time Favorites

Since Bible journaling is something I genuinely love, I wanted to share a few of the supplies that make my quiet time a little more enjoyable.

You absolutely do not need these things to spend time with God. A Bible, a pen, and a willing heart are more than enough. But if you enjoy Bible journaling or are looking for a few supplies to get started, these are some of the things I love using.

3. Pray Throughout Your Day 🙏🏼

Prayer doesn't have to happen only when you're sitting at your desk with your Bible open.

We can talk to God anywhere.

Walking to class?

Pray.

Nervous about an exam?

Pray.

Excited about something?

Pray.

Stressed about your future?

Pray.

Having a really good day?

Pray.

Having a really bad day?

Definitely pray.

I've had moments where my prayer has literally just been, “God, I need You right now.”

And you know what?

That's okay.

Prayer doesn't have to be complicated or filled with perfect words. God already knows what's on our hearts.

College comes with so many decisions and emotions. Sometimes we feel like we have to figure everything out on our own, but we don't.

We can invite God into the little moments of our day.

Before an exam, you can ask Him for peace.

Before an important conversation, you can ask Him for wisdom.

When you're unsure about your future, you can ask Him to guide you.

When you're overwhelmed, you can simply remind yourself that you don't have to carry everything alone.

Sometimes the simplest prayer is enough:

“Lord, help me today.”

4. Surround Yourself With People Who Help You Stay Rooted 🤍

Who you surround yourself with matters.

College is such a unique season of life. You're meeting new people, experiencing new things, figuring out what you believe, and learning more about yourself.

Having people around you who encourage your faith can make such a difference.

That might mean finding a church near campus, joining a Bible study, getting involved in a Christian organization, finding a mentor, or simply having a friend who you know will pray with you.

You don't have to navigate college alone.

And Christian community doesn't have to look perfect.

Sometimes it's going to church together.

Sometimes it's grabbing coffee after a Bible study.

Sometimes it's sitting around talking about life for way longer than you planned.

Sometimes it's getting a text that says, “Hey, I've been thinking about you. How can I pray for you?”

Those little moments matter.

I think one of the sweetest things about having Christian friends is being able to encourage each other when one person feels stronger and help carry each other when someone is struggling.

Find people who point you back to Christ.

And just as importantly, be that person for someone else.

5. Give Yourself Grace When You Get Off Track 🌱

Okay, this one might be the most important.

Because eventually, you're going to get busy.

You're going to miss your quiet time.

You're going to have a week where your Bible stays closed more than you'd like.

You're going to get distracted.

You're going to realize you've been spending more time scrolling than praying.

And when that happens, give yourself grace.

Don't let one missed day turn into two weeks because you feel like you've already messed up.

Don't think you have to “get your life together” before you can come back to God.

Just come back.

Open your Bible.

Pray.

Start again.

That's one of the reasons the word grace means so much to me.

Grace reminds us that we don't have to be perfect.

We are going to mess up. We're going to get distracted. We're going to have hard seasons.

But God isn't asking us to be perfect before we come to Him.

He's inviting us to come as we are.

So if you've been feeling like you've fallen out of your routine with God, don't beat yourself up about it.

Start again today.

Staying Rooted Doesn't Mean Being Perfect 🌿

I think sometimes we make faith harder than it needs to be.

We feel like we need the perfect devotional routine.

The perfect Bible.

The perfect prayer life.

The perfect balance between school, work, church, friendships, and everything else.

But I'm learning that staying rooted doesn't mean every day will look the same.

Some mornings, you might have an hour to sit with your Bible.

Other mornings, you might read a verse while drinking your coffee before rushing to class.

Some weeks, you might feel incredibly close to God.

Other weeks, you might realize you've been distracted and need to slow down.

That's okay.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is returning to the Root.

College is a season of growth. We're learning, making mistakes, making decisions about our futures, figuring out relationships, and discovering who we are.

I don't want to be so focused on what's next that I forget Who is walking with me right now.

I want to chase my dreams while trusting God with the outcome.

I want to work hard toward my future career without allowing my accomplishments to become my identity.

I want to enjoy college without losing sight of my faith.

And most importantly, I want to keep growing while staying rooted in Christ.

A Little Encouragement for Your Week 🤍

If you're reading this during a busy semester and feeling overwhelmed, take a breath.

You don't have to fix everything today.

You don't have to have your entire future figured out.

You don't have to create the perfect routine.

Start small.

Open your Bible.

Say a prayer.

Listen to worship music while you're getting ready.

Take a few minutes to be still.

Reach out to a friend.

And then keep going.

Because staying rooted isn't about never getting distracted.

It's about knowing where to return when you do.

So, whatever this season looks like for you, I hope you remember that God is with you in all of it—the exciting moments, the stressful ones, the unanswered questions, the late nights, the early mornings, and everything in between.

Keep growing. Keep seeking. Keep showing up. And when life gets busy, remember where your roots are. 🌿

A Prayer for the Busy College Student

Lord, thank You for being with us in every season. When life feels busy and overwhelming, help us remember that You are our foundation. Help us make time for You even when our schedules are full. Give us wisdom in our classes, friendships, decisions, and future plans. When we feel like we're falling behind, remind us that our worth isn't found in our productivity or accomplishments. Help us give ourselves grace and continually return to You. Keep our hearts rooted in You as we grow, learn, dream, and step into everything You have planned for us. Amen.

One Last Thing 🌿

What is one small thing you can do this week to stay rooted?

Maybe it's opening your Bible tomorrow morning.

Maybe it's praying before your next class.

Maybe it's finding a church or Bible study.

Maybe it's simply taking five quiet minutes to talk to God.

Whatever it is, start there.

One small step. One intentional moment. One reminder that you're rooted in Christ.

And remember—you don't have to walk through this season alone.
